Featured Images

Notipo automatically generates 1200×628 featured images for your WordPress posts. Choose between two modes: Standard (Unsplash photo or custom background with text overlay) or AI Generated (unique illustrations created by Google Gemini).

Pro plan
Featured image generation is available on the Pro plan only. Free plan posts are synced without featured images.

Image Modes

Choose your preferred mode in Settings → Featured Images. The mode applies to all new posts for your account.

1
Standard
Background photo (Unsplash or custom upload) with your post title overlaid as text. This is the default mode.
2
AI Generated
A unique illustration generated by Google Gemini based on your post title, category, and tags. Choose a style like comic book, watercolor, minimalist, 3D render, photorealistic, cyberpunk, or retro.

Per-category custom uploads always take priority — if you've uploaded a background image for a category, it's used regardless of the mode setting.

How It Works

During the Post to Wordpress step, Notipo:

  1. 1Checks the image mode — Standard or AI Generated
  2. 2In Standard mode: looks up the category background (uploaded, default, or Unsplash) and renders the Featured Image Title as text overlay
  3. 3In AI Generated mode: sends the post title, category, tags, and your chosen style to Google Gemini to create a unique illustration
  4. 4Generates a 1200×628 PNG
  5. 5Uploads it to your WordPress media library as the post's featured image
  6. 6If an Unsplash photo was used (Standard mode), adds photographer attribution to the end of the post content

The Featured Image Title property in your Notion database controls the text that appears on the generated image. This is separate from the post title — you can use a shorter or more visual version. If left empty, the post title is used instead.

Category Background Images

Each category can have its own background image. There are four sources, checked in this order:

1
Custom upload
Upload your own image per category from the Categories & Tags page
2
Default images
Notipo includes built-in background images you can choose from
3
Unsplash
A relevant landscape photo auto-selected by category name. Each post gets a different photo for variety. Attribution is added automatically.
4
Gradient fallback
If Unsplash is unavailable, a dark gradient background based on the category

Uploading a Custom Background

  1. 1Go to the Categories & Tags page in your dashboard
  2. 2Click on a category's background image thumbnail
  3. 3Upload a new image (PNG, JPEG, or WebP, max 5 MB)
  4. 4The image will be used for all future featured images in that category

Unsplash Backgrounds

When no custom background image is set for a category, Notipo automatically selects a relevant landscape photo from Unsplash. The search is based on the category name, and each post within the same category gets a different photo for visual variety.

When an Unsplash photo is used, a small attribution line is automatically added to the end of the WordPress post content: "Photo by [Photographer] on Unsplash". This is required by the Unsplash license and is handled entirely by Notipo — no manual action needed.

AI Generated Images

When AI Generated mode is enabled, Notipo uses Google Gemini to create a unique illustration for each post. The image is based on the post title, category, tags, and your chosen style.

Available styles:

  • Comic Book — bold outlines and vibrant colors
  • Watercolor — soft, painterly textures
  • 3D Render — polished three-dimensional look
  • Minimalist — clean shapes and muted tones
  • Photorealistic — lifelike imagery
  • Cyberpunk — neon-lit futuristic scenes
  • Retro — vintage and nostalgic aesthetic

No text is included in the generated image — the illustration is purely visual. Choose your style in Settings → Featured Images.

Inline Image Caching

Notion stores inline images on temporary S3 URLs that expire after a short time. Notipo handles this automatically:

  1. 1During sync, Notipo downloads all inline images from Notion
  2. 2Uploads each image to your WordPress media library
  3. 3Replaces the temporary Notion URLs with permanent WordPress URLs in the post content
  4. 4Caches the mapping so re-syncing the same post doesn't re-upload unchanged images

If you delete a post from WordPress, any orphaned media library images from that post are cleaned up automatically on the next sync.

Image Dimensions

Featured images are generated at 1200×628 pixels, which is the standard Open Graph image size. This works well for social media sharing (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) and WordPress theme featured images.

For best results, upload background images at or above this resolution. Images are automatically scaled and cropped to fit.
